Symbology Series

This series is based on the usage of symbolism. Each piece represents a hidden meaning in the shapes and insects being used. These symbols signify emotion, thoughts and a particular state of mind. They are a representation of my life and the world around me.

The first image is the heart and the weaver spider. In ancient times the heart was believed to serve as the core of human emotions. It has always been seen as the site of unity of body and spirit, and the depth and authenticity of an individual’s feelings. The heart in this image is surrounded and contained by darkness however, its spirit holds on and continues to shine brightly. In the center is the weaver spider, serving as a reminder that we have the power to weave and create our own realities. The spider awakens this awareness and tells us it’s time to rebuild the web of our lives.

The second image is the infinity sign and the boll weevil. This symbol represents an element that goes on forever. The sign of the figure 8 has a continuous flow that constantly stays stuck in the same perpetual motion. In this photograph it signifies outside factors and influences that never change. The weevil adds insight to the type of environment that this state is caught in. In the late 1800’s the weevil was marked as a creature of destruction. It wrecked havoc on farmer’s crops and ruined people lives. No other agricultural pest in history has caused this amount of devastation. The weevil sitting on the infinity sign binds the two together signifying the infinite destruction of the surrounding world.

The third piece is the spiral and the crab spider. The spiral’s role in this image is to symbolize growth and evolution. Spirals move in either direction and represent returning to the same point in life’s journey with new levels of understanding. The crab spider exemplifies the need to honor one’s self with this new, obtained knowledge. He sits proudly on top on the spiral expressing his sense of empowerment. The spider comes to see that all of life’s experiences can teach us a greater spiritual lesson. Wisdom becomes a tool of self-protection. Obtaining this knowledge allows us to re-enter the spiral of life without repeating previous mistakes so we can evolve, grow, and sustain our existence.
